I like Ben Stiller. I support the efforts of comedians to rise the heights of being serious actors. I liked him in “Permanent Midnight.” So I looked forward to see him in “Greenberg.” But, sorry, the whole time, I was watching Mahler, the German Shepherd. Would he be taken care of the way he should be? Would he survive his illness? The human story became secondary and the beautiful Shepherd took center stage. I can’t help it. If there’s a dog in a movie, in any sort of peril, that becomes my focus. Mahler survived. Whew!
